Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive and affirming environment that values and respects diversity of culture and identity, both within our organization and in the larger community.  To accomplish this goal, we will be advocates for change by listening, learning, and leading:

Listening to our diverse communities to gain awareness of varied perspectives;
Learning to build and sustain a mutually respectful environment that encourages an open exchange of ideas in an unbiased way;
Leading by embracing inclusion as the standard practice in our work.

'Diversity & Inclusion Statement', adopted 2006
by the CCE-Tompkins' Board of Directors

ComMittment to Diversity & Inclusion

The statement above results from the efforts of the Staff Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a group of employees who meet monthly with the following goals:

  • To improve recruitment, hiring and retention of a more diverse paid and volunteer staff
  • To improve CCE-Tompkins' marketing and program materials, ensuring that they are inclusive and/or reflective of the audience with regard to graphics, content and wording
  • Steer for the Association implementing the Diversity and Inclusion Statement
  • Create a forum for paid and volunteer staff to bring issues, concerns and suggestions to this committee

In addition to developing and facilitating approval of our Association's Diversity Statements, ongoing efforts by the committee to achieve these goals have included: Arranging for diversity trainings at all-staff meetings with guest presenters and diversity workshops at staff retreats; Conducting ADA self-audits with recommendations and resulting facility improvements; Conducting Civil Rights Compliance self-audits with recommendations; Workshops for staff on AA and EOE; hiring for inclusion and recruiting a diverse applicant pool; Diversity Committee participation in interviewing/hiring process; and more.

Consider joining the Staff Diversity & Inclusion Committee and help make CCE-Tompkins a more inclusive and welcoming place for employees, volunteers, program participants, and other members of the community.  For more information about joining, contact Audrey Cooper at ajc39@cornell.edu.
